In a French village years ago, the people gathered to plan a warm welcome for their new pastor. They decided that each would bring some new wine to pour into a large barrel ; the barrel would then be presented as a gift to the pastor.
The blacksmith, a wise and frugal man, decided that since the rest were bringing wine, he could bring water. No one, he thought, would know the difference.
The moment came for the gift presentation, and when the pastor sampled the “wine” it was, in fact, pure water. All the villagers had been “wise and frugal”. Every one depended on someone else to give generously .
